Africa is the world's 2nd largest continent, ranging more than 5,000 miles from northern countries like Morocco on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, south to the tip of South Africa. It is generally believed that human life first began on the continent of Africa some 7 million years ago, and today, Africa is made up of a fascinating diversity of peoples, who together make up over 50 nations.

One of the major attractions of travel in Africa is of course, the world's greatest display of wildlife – with herds of elephants and prides of lions still roaming free through a series of superb National Parks and game reserves. But not to be overlooked is the kaleidoscope of ethnic cultures that also abound on the continent - from the Berbers in the north to the Zulus in the south, every trip to Africa is sure to feature some contact with local cultures.

In such a vast continent, there are of course a myriad of different trips that can be planned that can include everything from tracking gorillas in Uganda or exploring the Dogon cliffs in Mali, to relaxing in luxury upon the fine sands of a beach in Zanzibar. That being said, the most popular journeys on the continent (not including North African countries such as Egypt or Morocco) remain safari oriented trips through the countries of Kenya and Tanzania, featuring such highlights as the Serengeti, Masai Mara, Ngorongoro Crater and Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Those looking for a more balanced itinerary that includes both wildlife and luxury touring frequently consider heading to South Africa, where you can combine fabulous safaris with time spent touring Cape Town, the Winelands and the coastal Garden Route. Of course tours to South Africa can easily be combined with visit to neighbouring Botswana and Namibia.
